MIND
OMOIYARI:
ART H
THE
OF
COMPASSIONATE THINKING
WHAT IS
OMOIYARI?
Omoiyari can be
loosely translated
as “compassionate
consideration” or
“thoughtfulness.” But
it’s more than just a
passing thought or a
昀氀eeting moment of
sympathy.
Omoiyari is a
deliberate mindset
where you actively
think about others’
needs, feelings,
and experiences,
often before they
even express them.
It’s about putting
yourself in someone
else’s shoes and
thinking, “How can
I ease their burden
or add a little joy to
their day?”
Unlike simple
kindness or
generosity,
Omoiyari is deeply
rooted
in anticipating the
needs of others and
taking action,
however small, to
address them.
Imagine someone
pouring your cup of
tea before you even
realise it’s empty or
holding an umbrella
over you before the
first drop of rain hits
—that’s Omoiyari in
action.
ave you ever paused
to consider how your
actions affect others,
not just in a direct sense but in
the ripple effect they create?
This beautiful and thoughtful
approach to life is at the heart
of a Japanese concept called
Omoiyari.
Pronounced
“oh-noy-yah-ree,” this
term encapsulates
the idea of empathy and
consideration for others
in a profound and
proactive way.
