Technology-Facilitated Abuse
Modern technology can be misused to monitor
or control behaviour. This may include tracking
phone or computer usage, installing spyware or
sharing private images without consent, with the
intention of causing harm or distress.
Financial Abuse
Financial abuse limits a person’s access to money
and economic resources. This may include
unauthourised use of funds, restricting the ability
to work or controlling how money is spent.
The Impact in Numbers
Recent statistics highlight the widespread nature
of this violence in Australia:
An estimated 3.8 million adults (20% of the
population) have experienced physical
and/or sexual family and domestic violence.
Approximately 11.3% (2.2 million) have
suffered violence from a partner, while 5.9%
(1.1 million) have experienced abuse from a
dating partner.
Family members are also affected, with 7.0%
(1.4 million) reporting violence from another
relative.
In 2021–22, 1 in 6 women and 1 in 18 men
experienced physical and/or sexual violence
from a current or former cohabiting partner.
Emotional and economic abuses are similarly
prevalent, affecting 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7
men, and 1 in 6 women and 1 in 13 men
respectively.
Stalking affects 1 in 5 women and
approximately 1 in 15 men.
Preliminary findings from the 2022 Australian
eSafety Commissioner’s online safety survey also
indicate a troubling rise in negative online
experiences, including unauthourised tracking of
location and receiving threats of real-life harm.
