WHAT IS
?
FULNESS
In broad terms, mindfulness is ‘an intentional act of presentmoment awareness without attachment to an outcome.’ It involves
awareness, watchfulness of your thoughts, and self-compassion. Key
principles of mindfulness include:
•
Non-judgement
•
Letting go
•
Patience
•
Acceptance (but not giving up)
•
Non-striving
•
Trusting yourself
If you 昀椀nd yourself feeling anxious about sleep or dwelling
on its consequences, try to adopt thoughts aligned with the
principles of mindfulness.
THE NINE
MINDFULNESS
PRINCIPLES
AND SLEEP
1. Beginner’s Mind
•
Approach each bedtime as a fresh start, free of
past bad nights.
•
Don’t assume last night’s sleep will dictate
tonight’s.
•
Avoid expecting every night to be poor.
•
Let go of expectations about how you’ll sleep.
2. Non-Striving
•
Sleep cannot be forced—it happens naturally.
•
Think of falling asleep like digestion—it unfolds on
its own.
•
Balance your desire for sleep with the act of
simply letting it come.
