people around the
world come together to
celebrate International
Women’s Day. It is a day
to recognise the social,
cultural, economic and
political achievements
of women everywhere.
In 2026, the theme GIVE
TO GAIN takes centre
stage. It is a simple
and powerful reminder
that when we give
support, opportunity,
encouragement or
kindness, we gain
stronger communities
and a fairer world for all.
International Women’s
Day is not only a
celebration. It is also a
call to action. It invites
everyone to re昀氀ect on
progress, highlight areas
where equality is still
needed and take steps
that help women and
girls thrive.
How it all began
International Women’s
Day has deep roots.
More than a century
ago, women in North
America and Europe
were 昀椀ghting for the
right to vote, safer
working conditions
and equal rights. Their
activism sparked the
昀椀rst observances in the
early 1900s.
In 1910, at a global
gathering of working
women, a proposal
was made to create a
worldwide Women’s
Day. The idea was
embraced and the 昀椀rst
of昀椀cial celebrations
