Your Best
Breast
Defence:
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
When it comes to
health, your breasts are
part of the picture and
breast cancer’s a pretty
big one. But here’s the
good news: knowing the
facts, catching it early,
and being breast-aware
give you real power.
Why it matters:
Australia’s stats &
global snapshot
In Australia, breast cancer
is the most commonly
diagnosed cancer among
women. In fact, it’s
estimated that in 2024,
about 21,194 people will
be diagnosed—including
20,973 women and 221
men. That’s around 58
diagnoses per day.
The 昀椀ve-year survival
rate is one of the world’s
best: 92 % (up from 78
% in the early ’90s), with
10-year survival around
87 %. Still, approximately
3,272 women and 36 men
are expected to die from
breast cancer in 2024.
A global look shows
Australia and New
Zealand top the charts
for breast cancer
incidence (due in
part to screening,
lifestyle, and an ageing
population), but
mortality is falling—
down about 2.1% a
year—which aligns with
WHO’s global goals.
Worldwide, one in 20
women will be diagnosed
with breast cancer in her
lifetime. Without change,
by 2050, new cases could
soar by 38%, deaths by
68%—reaching 3.2 million
new cases and 1.1 million
deaths annually.
Why “Your Best Breast
Defence” is a winning
approach
• Screening works, and
it’s free for eligible
Aussie women—but
about half aren’t even
using it yet. Early
detection can make all
the difference.
• Mortality is dropping,
yet incidence is
climbing. That means
more of us will need
support, awareness,
and access.
• Globally, the burden is
shifting, so even if your
numbers are under
control locally, this is
everyone’s business.
