SENATE
INQUIRY
The Senate Inquiry into the
issues of perimenopause
and menopause was
initiated by Greens Senator
Larissa Waters. The
Committee progressed
around the country, hearing
evidence from health
professionals, researchers,
industry representatives,
and everyday women
sharing their lived
experiences. It’s been an
arduous process for the
Committee members, who
will report their findings
and recommendations.
At the Senate Inquiry’s
Canberra hearing, Dr
Teagle recommended
the development of a
National Menopause
Action Plan, which would
bring key stakeholders
together for a common
purpose: to improve
the experiences and
wellbeing of menopausal
people. “Menopause is a
physiological trigger for
chronic diseases which
eventually result in loss of
function and independence.
If we get this right - if we
take a uni昀椀ed approach
in our efforts - we can
facilitate timely interventions
at midlife that will hugely
reduce the future burden of
chronic disease and improve
women’s quality of life in
older age.”
ABOUT
DR KELLY TEAGLE
Dr Kelly Teagle graduated in Medicine
from the University of Queensland in
2001 and worked as a Medical Of昀椀cer
in the Royal Australian Air Force.
Some years later, she became a GP
specialising in women’s reproductive
and sexual healthcare. At age 42, Kelly
experienced an early menopause, which
further motivated her to study and treat
menopausal issues. Then, in late 2018,
she founded the WellFemme Telehealth
Menopause Clinic to help women access
expert menopause care regardless of
where they live. WellFemme now has
many doctors and thousands of grateful
patients located all around the country.
Realising that many women also needed
guidance and support in targeting
lifestyle changes for healthy ageing,
Kelly developed the Next Phase women’s
wellness program. Next Phase aims to
reduce the burden of chronic disease
in older women and help them live
healthier, happier, longer lives.
Kelly is based in Canberra, where she
sees patients by Telehealth and manages
WellFemme. She also writes health
articles and is a women’s health speaker
and advocate.
