Why Taking Action Is Worth It
When someone 昀椀nally takes the
leap and sees a GP, they start to
昀椀nd out what is happening. Anxiety,
depression, the whole shebang.
GPs are not there to dismiss
concerns. They are trained in this
area of health, can help and have
their patients’ best interests at heart.
A mental health plan is often the
昀椀rst step.
Many people recognise the
昀椀rst principle of the AA 12 step
programme from 昀椀lms and popular
culture. It begins with admitting
and acknowledging that there is
a problem. However, receiving a
diagnosis without action is not
enough. It is easy to feel that a
diagnosis is the same as personality.
In reality, identity is not built on
mental health. It is the other way
around. Taking the next leap of faith
and acting on a diagnosis can be
one of the most important steps
toward recovery.
Taking action can help to:
• Reduce stigmas and increase
internal awareness
• Provide a sense of purpose and
meaning in life
• Support stronger relationships
• Help overcome dif昀椀cult feelings
and mental illness
• Improve coping skills
• Support effective navigation of
turbulent times
Finding Support Is
Easier Than You Think
For anyone who has
experienced or is
experiencing mental ill
health, support is always
available. Call Lifeline
on 13 11 14. Visit a GP or
seek support from
a psychologist.
Taking that 昀椀rst step
may feel daunting,
but it can also be the
beginning of feeling
understood, supported
and far less alone.
